Fifty-four years, one promise.
Fred Coates arrived in Northern Rhodesia in 1953 as a builder and a plumber. By 1960 he was Heavyweight Wrestling Champion of Northern Rhodesia, and Zambians called him Fearless Fred. He retired as reigning champion in 1972 — and on 12 September that year opened a small auctioneering business, naming it after himself and his wife Joey.
He later gave away the farmland north of the yard; the neighbourhood there is now Garden Compound. Fredjoe still trades from the middle of it. Fifty-four years, same name, same floor.
